International Law and the War on Ukraine
An Online Panel Discussion
November 17th, 2023
1:30pm-3:30pm
What relationship does international law have with the ongoing war on Ukraine initiated by the President of Russia in February 2022? Russia in its successive state forms – Imperial Russia, the Soviet Union, and the Russian Federation – has been an active participant in international law fora since the nineteenth century and into our times. Does the current war signal a break with earlier practices or are Russia’s initiatives and responses consistent with longer term engagements with other nations and states? How has the Ukrainian government addressed issues of international law before and during the conflict? Panelists will consider the historical context of the contemporary clash as well as the impact of the war on international law and its capacities in the present reconfiguration of global politics
