Sovereign wealth funds and government owned entities are an increasingly important participant in world financial markets. Compared to traditional institutional investors, sovereign wealth funds like Mubadala Investment Company, are making larger investments for longer time horizons. They employ innovative investment models in alternative asset allocation and have increased their exposure in “new economy” tech investments amid the current fourth industrial revolution. How are they adapting to evolving capital markets—and consequently, the rising digital economy—as we know it?

Speaker Bios

Christopher Pearson Fazekas, General Counsel at Mubadala Capital, the alternative asset management division of Mubadala Investment Company (a $225 billion Fund owned by Emirate of Abu Dhabi). Mr. Fazekas is an Abu Dubai-based New York qualified lawyer responsible for the management of Mubadala’s Capital’s activities, including the oversight of investments into Russia. He is also a member of Mubadala Capital’s Investment Committee and Management Committee. Prior to his role at Mubadala Capital, Mr. Fazekas oversaw group-wide Mergers and Acquisitions activity at Mubadala Investment Company as a Senior Legal Counsel for the Mubadala Group. Prior to joining Mubadala in 2010, Mr. Fazekas worked for Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP in New York and Hong Kong focusing on cross-border Mergers & Acquisitions. Mr. Fazekas holds a J.D. magna cum laude and LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from Duke University and a B.A. in Economics with distinction from the University of Virginia.

Kevin Kokko joined Mubadala in 2008 and is the Head of Business Development & Investor Relations and Co-Head of Private Equity for Mubadala Capital and a member of the Mubadala Capital Investment Committee. Mr. Kokko has a background in investment banking with Citigroup in Toronto and London and has previously worked for the Office of Tony Blair first in one of Mr. Blair’s charities, Africa Governance Initiative, and most recently in Mr. Blair’s commercial business, Tony Blair Associates, where he was a Director of Advisory and Principal Strategies. Mr. Kokko graduated from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario with an Honors in Business Administration degree.

Winston Ma is an investor, author, and adjunct professor in the digital economy. Most recently, he was Managing Director and Head of North America Office for China Investment Corporation (CIC), China’s sovereign wealth fund. Prior to that, Mr. Ma served as the deputy head of equity capital markets at Barclays Capital, a vice president at J.P. Morgan investment banking, and a corporate lawyer at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP in New York. He is the book author of China’s Mobile Economy (2017) and China’s Data Economy (2019 forthcoming). Mr. Ma received his master of law degree from the New York University School of Law (LL.M, Hauser Global Scholar ’98), and in 2014 he received the NYU Distinguished Alumni Award.
