Argentina hosted the Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the first time on 10-13 December 2017 (MC11). In a context of uncertainty regarding the future of international trade, Argentina is convinced that the way forward is a strong multilateral system, and that it is necessary to bring the WTO closer to the people. In the upcoming MC11, Argentina wants to help facilitate a renewed multilateralism.
As part of its efforts, the Government of the Argentine Republic launched the “MC11 Think Track,” aimed at supporting academic activities in the field of international trade that can contribute to the success of the MC11. With the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) and the Institute for the Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean (INTAL), and along with the Argentine Council for International Relations (CARI), the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) School of Law, the University of Barcelona’s Master of Laws in International Economic Law and Policy (IELPO LL.M.), the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, and New York University School of Law’s Institute for International Law and Justice (IILJ), the Ministry of Production of Argentina hosted a Conference entitled “Thinking a Global Trade Governance for the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities on the Eve of the WTO´s 11th Ministerial Conference” on 13 December 2017. The Conference promoted the presentation and discussion of different perspectives about the MC11 and the future of the Organization.
